2012 Kevin Cleveland Memorial
WOW! What a day! In one of the smoothest run tournaments in Scioto history; our Irish coaches and wrestlers really distinguished themselves as a force to be reckoned with in central Ohio. The total tally for the Irish was 1 championship, 2 second place, 2 third place, 1 sixth place and 2 seventh place finishes. Again, WOW! Way to go Irish wrestlers! (and major kudos to Coach McKenzie for a great, well run tournament!)
Editorial note: This was some of the best wrestling this reporter has seen yet from our young Irish men. ALL of you deserve a big round of applause for an outstanding performance.

Big Shout-outs:
• For the outstanding job done in the hospitality room. There was LOTS of terrific food and if anybody went away hungry, it was their own fault. Well done and thank you!
• For the great efforts expended to provide a quality concessions area. I know there were many unexpected roadblocks, but you made it work anyway. Again, Well done and thank you!
• Finally, thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this event a success. It could not be done without all of you.
2011 Bishop Ready Winter Classic
7 Irish wrestlers battled for 2 days at the 2011 Bishop Ready Winter Classic on December 28 & 29. Preparing themselves for the new year, our Irish really stepped up against some tough competition from around the state. When it was all over, the Irish claimed 1 championship, 3 fourth place finishes, and 1 sixth place. Great job Irish!
Tournament Highlights:
Anthony Trocchio – 132# - 5 and 3 overall with 2 pins and 2 tech falls to his credit. Trocchio finished fourth out of 20 competitors. Anthony utilized his lightning-fast takedowns and potent leg-attack to decimate his opponents. Wow!
Cameron Wallace – 138# - 2 and 3 overall with 1 major decision to his credit before an injury forced him out of competition. Heal fast Cameron.
Dylan Languis – 145# - 3 and 5 overall with 1 pin and an exciting Overtime win to claim sixth place out of 19 competitors. Dylan showed exceptional improvement with every match. Keep watching our 145-pounder. There’s a lot more to come from this young man.
Brian Arumugam – 195# - 1 and 3 overall with 1 pin on the plus side to finish fourth out of 10 competitors over the two-days. Brian showed great tenacity against very tough opponents and finished strong.
Wesley King – 220# - 6 and 0 overall with an amazing 5 pins and 1 tech falls to finish undefeated, and first out of 16 competitors. Our sole champion showed exceptional dominance against every opponent that dared step out on the mat to challenge him. Congratulations Wesley!
Brennen Sawicki – 285# extra - 3 and 2 overall with 2 pins on the first day to his credit. Sawicki used his exceptional speed and strength to overpower his opponents and finish the tournament with a winning record.
Yoshi Akutsu – 285# - 5 and 2 overall. Displaying his overwhelming force, Yoshi pinned 5 opponents to finish fourth out of 16 competitors at 285#. It was a really outstanding performance!
Marysville Duals, It was a bright, sunny Saturday for the Irish to do battle at the Marysville Duals
Due to the lack of Irish competitors at 106 and 113 we started each dual by spotting our opponents 12 team points. Then, at 120, came Ian Richeson. Ian started out slowly but ended the fray with a 2-3 count, including a tech and a major win along the way. Dareal Vasser, at 126 opened his varsity career in fantastic fashion by pinning his first varsity opponent. Way to go Dareal! At 132, Taylor Talentino treated the Irish fans to some of the most exciting matches all day. His tenacity paid off in the dual against Indian Lake where Taylor won against a tough opponent. Nick Horvat took the mat in a stacked 138 weight class. Nick showed everyone his tough and persistent character. Dylan Languis made his debut at 145 and really distinguished himself with a pin against the Indian Lake 145-pounder. Good job Dylan! Devin Schneider wrestled at 152 for the Irish. He had a tough day in a very tough weight class, but showed a lot of potential in all of his matches. Stepping out at 160 was Brandon Carbajal. Brandon also had a win against Indian Lake and fought hard in all his other matches. Daniel Higuera had 2 pins and finished the day with a 3-2 record. Great wrestling Daniel! Jeffrey Jarry began the day at 182 against a tough Lancaster opponent. We hope to see a lot more of Jeffrey in the coming weeks. Brian Fox had a stellar, Dominant day at 182 by pinning all his opponents to go 4-0 on the day. Most of his opponents did not make it out of the first period! I don't think Brian even broke a sweat all day. Way to go Brian. Our second Brian (Arumugam) took the mat at 195. Brian was 2-3 on the day against a bunch of tough wrestlers. Nice job Brian. Wesley King had a solid day, going 5-0 with 3 pins. Wesley was VERY solid and VERY dominant, looking just like the returning State Qualifier he is. Our 285-pounders (Yoshi Akutsu & Brennon Sawicki) took turns pounding their opponents. Each had 2 pins on the day and really showed everybody how tough our big guys are. Great job!
Overall, the team had lots of "ups", many firsts and a few "downs" too, but walked away with a sixth place finish at the end of the day. Way to go Irish!
Irish Impressive in McKenzie’s Debut as Head Coach
The varsity wrestling squad took to the mat on Saturday in the Patrick Brown Invitational at Olentangy. The Irish looked impressive in McKenzie’s debut as head coach. Considering the fact the Irish did not have a wrestler competing in 5 of the 14 weight classes, a 6th place finish out of twelve teams is commendable.
With seven wrestlers placing top six or better the Irish earned a total of 144.5 pts. Leading the way were seniors, Wesley King (220) and Brian Fox (182), and Junior, Yoshi Akutsu (285). Both King and Akutsu finished the tournament in 2nd place while Fox, wrestling up one weight class, took home a third place finish. Senior, Ian Richeson (126), and junior, Connor Shirkey (138), took home fifth place medals while 6th place honors went to senior, Daniel Higuera (170), and junior, Anthony Trocchio (132). The Irish continue to work hard as they are getting ready to square off with some very tough completion this coming Saturday at the Marysville Duals.
